  2. Fortunately, the Recording Academy has always been able 
  3. to call upon a wide array of musical experts, both members 
  4. and non-members, to serve on its Grammy screening committees. 
  5. Dating back to the late '50s, when legendary music figures 
  6. like John Hammond and Benny Carter took part in the first 
  7. Grammy screening committee meetings, and on up through last 
  8. October's meetings in Los Angeles, these screening committees 
  9. continue to be an indispensable part of the Grammy process.

  11. That process begins in early August, when the national 
  12. awards staff starts processing all the entries which are 
  13. submitted by members and record companies over a two month 
  14. period. Basic information, such as release dates, record company 
  15. labels, artists' names and song titles, is verified, and the national 
  16. staff also conducts an internal screening process before handing 
  17. over the entries to the screening committees.
